Furries are a sub-culture of people interested in anthropomorphic animals or animals with human like characteristics.. For most in the community it's a hobby, for a handful they've made it a lifestyle. On a low level Furries have a large online community that share stories, artwork, etc and is generally harmless fun.
Depending on the furries I've asked, the reasons range from imprinting during childhood after watching anthro characters in cartoons, childhood sexual trauma which transformed into a furry fetish to cope, to porn warping their sexuality until they finally land on furry content.

Furries have a lot of subcultures just like any other group, but for those who are not into furries, it's just easier for them to assume furries are weird at best and degenerates at worst. Furries who dress up in fur suits for events get flack for having sex with others in the suits, even though that is rarely the case.
The furry community is, broadly speaking, a wholesome, open and helpful place. It's helped a lot of previously bullied kids, among them plenty of not straight people. It's makes and funds insane amounts of often great art, both sfw and nsfw. It's helping a lot of creators stay afloat.
