Yemen's Houthi rebels said they will target merchant ships belonging to any company that does business with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality, as part of what they say is a new phase of their operations against Israel.

Since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have carried out several attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, saying they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has responded with repeated strikes on Houthi targets, particularly in Hodeidah, a key entry point for goods and aid into Yemen.

Israel continued operations in Lebanon between July 14 and July 20, 2025. These activities included strikes on Radwan Force training camps and targeted killings of Hezbollah operatives.

The rebels have also continued attacking ships which they claim have ties to Israel. Earlier this month, the Houthis launched an attack on the Greek-owned Eternity C cargo ship in the Red Sea, near the city of Hodeidah. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the ship was attacked by multiple small vessels using RPGs.
