The first recorded quick-draw duel took place in Springfield between “Wild Bill” Hickok and Davis Tutt in 1865. It may have been Hickok’s first such duel, but it was not his last.

On July 12, 1861, the legend of Wild Bill Hickock was born in Jefferson County. Hickock, who worked for a freighting and stagecoach line, was set to buy the Rock Creek Station from David McCanles.
