The National Weather Service (NWS) issued several tornado warnings for the coastal areas of California around San Luis Obispo into the very early hours of Tuesday morning amid the threat of severe thunderstorms.

On Monday at 11:21 p.m. the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA released an updated tornado warning in effect until Tuesday at 12:15 a.m. for San Luis Obispo County.

While residents posted the carnage on social media, rumors of a Tempe tornado are "false," said Gabriel Lojero, a meteorologist in Phoenix.

The severe thunderstorm warning encompassed most of the populated parts of the county, stretching from Paso Robles south to Nipomo. According to the National Weather Service, a line of thunderstorms was recorded around 11:11 p.m. extending from 11 miles east of Cambria to 10 miles southwest of Morro Bay.

The National Weather Service said the EF5 twister in North Dakota packed winds stronger than 200 mph, underscoring risks that climate change brings.
