The ninth named storm, first hurricane and first major hurricane of that season, Irene formed from a well-defined Atlantic tropical wave that showed signs of organization east of the Lesser Antilles.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Wednesday marks 13 years since Hurricane Irene impacted New England as a tropical storm. Although Maine didn't take the brunt of the impact, it was still a major event in the state.
