The California Highway Patrol is warning the public to beware of fraudsters posing as "AMBER Alert representatives" offering to "register" children.

The scammers offer to "register" children for the AMBER Alert system, ask for confidential information and try to meet at victims' homes, officials said.

Phone scammers are posing as Amber Alert representatives to register children to the abduction emergency system, the California Highway Patrol warned Sunday. The Templeton division of the agency said scammers have asked for personal information and offered to meet at peoples’ homes to sign their children up for the alerts.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) said it is closely monitoring an Amber Alert phone scam that seems to be targeting Hispanic residents. According to SMCSO, residents should be on the lookout for scammers posing as Amber Alert reps who offer to register their children through the alert system.
