Slater was acquired so that the Yankees’ regular starting outfield with Aaron Judge on the IL – Jasson Dominguez, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham – doesn’t have to play every day and because he hits lefthanded pitching to the tune of a career .270/.362/.436 slash line. The former was the primary reason he was to face Rays righthander Ryan Pepiot.
