Disney is asking YouTube TV to restore ABC to its pay-TV bundle for Tuesday's Election Day as the companies negotiate a carriage renewal.
Neely is one of many consumers seeking a quick fix to get them through the blackout of Disney channels on YouTube TV, which also includes ESPN and FX. The fight is now in its second week and executives on both sides say little progress has been made to restore the channels to YouTube TV’s 10 million subscribers.
This is the third time in two months that YouTube TV has faced a contract dispute, but this one has had the largest consumer impact, by far.
Disney has had blackout disruptions on major providers in each of last two years, having an 11-day dispute with Charter in 2023 and a 13-day battle with DirecTV in 2024. There are a few other live TV streaming services offering great deals and channels that YouTube TV customers no longer have access to.
According to a new survey from Drive Research (via Variety ), YouTube TV subscribers aren't happy. In response to the standoff, 24% of respondents said they had already cancelled their subscription or were planning to do so. That's according to around 1,100 consumers who responded to the survey.
YouTube TV is driving a hard bargain with Disney, and has leverage since it's backed by Google. But it's also a powerhouse in its own right.
During perhaps one of the best seasons for watching sports on television, ESPN channels were removed from the YouTube TV streaming platform. However, there are way subscribers can watch football and more sports this weekend with some help from other streaming services.
