Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder characterized primarily by the development of multiple benign tumors called neurofibromas along nerves in the skin, brain, and other parts of the body. It is caused by a mutation in the NF1 gene, which is responsible for the production of neurofibromin, a protein that helps regulate cell growth.
